The little strap handles on the shoulder are characteristic of early Chinese pottery, often referred to as "Chinese Brown Glazed Stoneware" (CBGS), from southern China.

A web search for "Chinese pottery storage jar" will find a lot of variations. Many show up on the U.S. West Coast since so many pieces came over with the Chinese workers in the 1800s. They can still be found in excavations around the sites of early work camps.
