I have owned this item for over 20 years and still do not know what its purpose is. It is 9 inches long and shows signs of having been chromed. The jaws fit very snugly together and the hollow inside is egg shaped but flatter. It would be great t o finally find out what this item was used for.

I'm bringing this one up again because after all this time I still have no idea what its purpose is. Any ideas?

Was this tool for picking up hot iron rivets?

I believe that is an old loading tool. I couldn't find this exact one but here is an 1875 Winchester. Yours is much more modern but basically the same in design and looks.

I don't think so Watchsearcher, that would not explain the rounded shape and why they are made to close so tightly.
I see the similarity to the item in your link fhrjr2 but the cup shaped parts of that tool are the handles, probably flattened to allow more pressure to be exerted. On my item the cup shaped parts are on the business end.
Thanks to both of you for having a go.

Hello: The first thing i would do, is give them a vinegar and salt bath for 2 days, then wire brush and oil. Then Look for makers mark. Here is what i always ask myself when i find one like this: Are they, home made, factory made, or blacksmith made?
They appear to be factory made to me. Then i ask myself what tool they most resemble with the egg shaped "Captive Jaws"? My best guess would be to pursue the following tools. "Hog Ring Pliers", "Upholstery Compression Clip (staple) Pliers", "Fence Clip Pliers". If i find time i will take a long look myself.

      Good Luck

PS: All Three I Mentioned can be Interchangeable Tools.

Maybe for the old lead wire seals?
