Some of you won't understand the reference in the title.

But, I found this at the thrift store today. Made of a chalk-like material with sprayed-on glossy coating, this bear features something we'll all be looking at this summer:

A thermometer! (Sadly this one thinks it's always in the 40s-- or less).

    Mid century?

You all know how I love 'em bears. ;)

One in better shape Sold for 19.99 on e-Bay as a "1940s souvenir from Yellowstone". As for the veracity, I know not.

      Another calls it Syroco?

As I remember them, they were neither plaster nor Syroco but some sort of pressed paper pulp that was probably stabilized with a glue or resin. These bears were common souvenirs in the 1940s-50s that were sold just about anywhere that bears were noticeable. They are often found marked Yellowstone, Yosemite, and California (the bear is on the California state flag) and sometimes found in little wooden shipping crates.

Artfoot, thank you. That is interesting-- the paper pulp idea.

Ms. Crystal Ship, you got it.
