This little statue might be from India. Base on the population where I live, this would not be too unusual to find. The statue is an image of what I believe to be a village boy, wearing no top, and carrying a basket. The statue is mounted with three pins on a wooden base.
The little statue appears to be hand carved but the carving is not very professional - in my humble opinion. I think that it might date to around the middle of the last century, but this is just a guess.
There are lines in the material but not the typical cross lines/Schreger lines for ivory. At least I didn't see any. I assume that the statue might be cut of some sort of bone.

Looks like a resin material to me, made in a mold. The areas where the rope join his body, the area behind both knees and where his left hand holds the rope all appear to be blemishes and/or overflow, or air pockets made by a mold.

BTW, I had another close look but there are no air pockets or evidence of mold lines. I still don't know what the material is (I think it is bone but it could be a heavy resin) but I doubt that it molded. Labour in India is very cheap and the quality of the item is not very good so to say that it is carved doesn't really add any value to the piece.
