What would this little cup be for? I've seen them before. It has a very nice heavy silver plate on it and stands 2" tall by 3" in diameter.

What it immediately reminded me of was a wine bottle coaster. However, those dimensions seem a bit modest (particularly the 3" diameter) for that purpose.
