I found this about 6 months ago and just love it! It's not new, but i doubt it's very old either. I've had it on my wall for nearly a year now and just recently got very curious about it. Any info appreciated. the marbleized frame is pretty cool too. Is she a Carmelite nun?

Good artwork. Is she looking at Heaven above? The marbleized frame brings out the colors of the painting. The artist depicted the fabric nicely & facial features as well.

I think it was a Meyers-Briggs book that addressed the terrible reputation nuns tend to have as teachers.
It speculated that a lot of women drawn to become nuns were attracted by the idea of a life of solitude and contemplation, but because they were women frequently found themselves tasked with floor-scrubbing, nursing, and teaching small children.
A lot of them were simply not temperamentally suited for those tasks. Of course, if you're crabby about scrubbing floors, nobody's going to care too much except maybe the Mother Superior, but having charge of the sick and the small is another matter.
Then again, if the woman in the picture is a Carmelite nun, she probably didn't have to deal with the latter. Perhaps she was thinking, "Who is making all that racket in the next cell?"

great link keramikos! sisterhood was such an important option for women in past years. some of my closest friends are nuns. those photos of all the contraptions they were forced to wear are pretty scarey though!

keramikos - i think that their reputation and attitudes are shaped by the very strict and punishing codes they live by. i went to catholic schools and honestly, i had a good experience. most of my teachers were out gay and lesbian people . i'm still friends w/ some of them.
