This is my great grandfather Terrance James McDonald. I have looked everywhere for another GAR medal similar to this one to no avail. Each point of the star contains 3 diamonds. Please let me know anything you can about this medal, the DAR and my great grandfather. THANKS.

I would guess he was a GAR post commander and this medal was custom made a presented to him out of respect for his service to the post.
The medal names him as Capt. T.J. Mcdonald, his military rank, but the blue broach at the top shows a eagle designating his GAR rank as a Colonel.
