this is hanging on my porch in the dry, just like my great grandfather did. i noticed it is peeling and i am looking for suggestions on how to stop it. thank you

you could clear coat it but that might take away from the value, I would suggest a coat of car wax (front and back) to keep the moisture out.
Just my humble thought ,I would leave it alone and put it indoors

Put the sign in a more controlled environment to prevent further peeling.
It's only original once.
Your sign looks great as is.
that`s why I quit posting on here. To me it sounds like the poster wants to display the thermometer on his porch like his relatives did ( out of the weather) . I have numerous thermometers outside, (where they are meant to be, the same with gas and oil signs) a light coat of wax does not hurt them and they are protected.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the way you suggested.... in YOUR opinion.
The poster will decide.... he just asked for suggestions... the poster will weigh out and make a decision on the pros and cons.
In fact.... I have used wax on some of my signs to leave outside in the elements.

Exactly , the poster did not want to keep the thermometer inside so I gave my opinion, just to get told that he should put it inside--which is NOT what he was asking. Don`t like the oneupsmanship., I was just trying to help.

he just wanted to know how to stop the Degradation of his thermometer
the only way to stop this is to get it out of the environment
Sure wax will-work , but rust never sleeps
waxing over rust will not stop the oxidation process
I guess you could also encase it in cement:)
I really appreciate all the suggestions. Bringing it inside is a thought, but hate to because of my limited wall space and the size of the thermometer. If that is what I must do, then I will, in order to keep it preserved longer. I didnt inherit much and I would like to have something to pass down. Its been on my porch for 20 years and this peeling is something i just noticed. Will it continue to rust indoors though? Thank you

reading his original post ,he says it’s outside that’s irrelevant ,
what he is asking is a way to stop it from rusting ,
if it’s outside it’s going to rust ,,if it’s inside out of the humidity
it is not going to continue to rust ,, sure it’s nice to have it outside but

sorry mr. know-it-all. I was just giving my suggestion so he could keep it outside I guess I should have added that it would be better out of the weather but it seemed like that was not what the poster wanted to do. next time I will list all the options regardless of what the poster asks. O.K.?

Welcome to CW. Please excuse the petty disagreement. You were asking for opinions and got a few different ones. We normally don't have these issues, so please don't get the wrong idea..come back and pist more treasures.
My opinion is that you need to treat it with a rust neutralizer. As V33 said, rust will not stop..unless neutralized.
OR you can also use a product like POR15..they make a clear version. This product encapsulates the rust, keeping the oxygen from reaching the rust which prevents it from further rusting. I would only coat the rust areas. This product can be painted over(POR= paint over rust) so in the future, it may have those areas blended in to match the rest. If you are keeping it outside, make sure to use the UV safe version.
Regardless of which method you choose, you should first research your item and determine the rarity and value. If neither is a factor, then you can do whatever you please. If it's rare and/or valuable it's still your piece and you can decide.
