I got a set with the same cover a few years ago but the contents are completely different. The other has various test tubes and such and this one has a microscope. This one is missing all the nifty biology samples but it was only $5. I was just going to use it as a carrying case but it already has stuff in it. Stuff being a microscope. The microscope has 2 lens settings and used a single AA battery.
One note about the Skil Craft sets is that they have both boys and girls on the front. The Gilbert sets are strictly male. The clothes have the early Brady Bunch look so I am thinking sometime about 1971.

I thinknI had one of these sets. The set included glass slides, some with embedded samples, and a pack of extra blank slides. The slides were fragile and broke easily. Your guess of 1971 is accurate. I loved this microscope, and I used it a lot!
