8 3/4" cast iron advertising sign that probably was mounted on a completed fence. "The Buckeye Fence", December 1889 is on the sign. Mast, Foos, & Company, Springfield, Ohio. Image is deceiving at first glance. What looks like a slot screw head is actually the deer's nose and mouth.

Makes sense that they would put advertising tags every so many metres. The interesting thing is that it is that large. Cast iron lasts a really long time exposed but would be a serious expense to make them. Interesting poste that makes me wonder.
Thanks for the comment blunderbuss2. Wondered about the use also. Buckeye Fence may have been cast iron as well. Sure would like to know. Maybe someone can solve the mystery.

Description This photograph shows the Mast, Foos & Company of Springfield, Ohio. The company was founded by Phineas P. Mast in 1884 and manufactured Iron Turbine Wind Engines, Buckeye Force Pumps, Buckeye Lawn Mowers, and other products. The company employed 300 people in 1884. The 1884 History of the Manufactories of Springfield, Ohio declared, "In their line of manufacture there is probably no company in existence so well known, and whose products reach so many different classes of people. They are represented largely by their work all over the United States and Canada, Australia, Mexico, France, etc." This photograph is from the book Springfield Illustrated, which provides a written and photographic profile of the city. The photographs include residences of prominent citizens, schools, churches, businesses, and street views. The book is 74 pages and measures 9" x 12.75" (22.86 x 32.39 cm).
