About 10 years ago I was caregiver to woman in York, Maine who gave me this necklace she had made as a gift. I never noticed that it opened until recently. Some say it held perfume to hide body odor, while other's say it was used to hold sewing needles. Any info would be wonderful.

It's actually a prayer box; it has different names in different Asian cultures and is made to carry a scroll with a sacred text or a prayer or even a small reliquary.
It would have held prayers.
