Just inherited these guardian dogs. I have looked at Foo and Shi Shi guardian dogs but they do not match what I have (the tails seem unique). These dogs are bronze. The larger dog is 12" long and they are very heavy. I know they date back to 1850's as that was when my Great Grandfather went to Japan and started The American Trading Company.
Wondering if anyone might know more about these precious dogs. Can anyone interpret the markings?

Wow, These are great.
These are beautifully made and should be the work of experience artisans. If they were made in Japan or China, they usually would have makers marks. Have you had a look at the bottom of these dogs?
I found a mark on the big dog and have put the picture up. Can anyone translate for me?
