While the true restoration companies refurbish trunks "as they were", I have taken the liberty to embellish and augment those design specifics which add character, while still utilizing all the original hardware. I found this alligator pressed steel trunk in the decayed state you see on the far right. With most of the black steel siding badly rusted, I decided to replace it all with brass sheeting. A section of the back structure had to be replace which meant having to not only strip the trunk of every piece of wood and steel (and nails!), but a rebuilding of the wall. At least 15 coats of tung oil were used on all the wood surfaces, the inside is lined with a pin-striped maroon velvet.

Randallbar: Nice job on the refinishing-The 1900 Sears catalog has over 40 trunks listed with drawing,description and prices.The orginal catalog is hard to come by but there are some great reproductions available.Also seen a dvd of the catalog up for auction on eBay.
I got this same trunk today and I love it. I truley love the work you have put into this piece of furniture. I,ve got some pics that i have posted on this web site. The trunk I have is not as bad as what you described yours before restoring it. did your has wheels on the bottom? this one does and moves smoothly. Please tell me how much you put into it. I really like to copy some of your ideas. Thank you
