This medal was given to us by my mother in laws Husband. He also have me his M1 carbine and the holster. I do not know how he earned it.

It is a Marine Corps Marksmanship Qualification Badge earned during Boot Camp (at least my son's was). It is the highest level, meaning best shot. I'm not sure of the requirement to obtain that level. The other levels below it are Sharpshooter and Marksman (Referred to as "Pizza Box" due to the simple square)
