An impressive complete vintage yet minimalistic modern set of heavy, solid sterling silver, signed chess piece, plus a sterling trimmed, signed board and the original case.
Each king piece weighs about 87 grams, a knight is 55 grams, rook is over 70 grams.
Each piece is signed with a lion (or some lion-like animal), and the script writing of “Frei”.
Dimensions: matching board is 13.5? square; sterling silver square divider is 1/8?, same with boarder.
Board on the side is 3/4? high covered in sterling (1/8?X3/4?) on all 4 sides of the board, of course. Feet are about 1/2? high. See picture for back of board. Board is also SIGNED “Frei” with the same animal.
Chess pieces: wow so fabulous: heavy, each glazed wood base is 1/2? square.
King measures 2? high (excluding base) X 3/4? at widest. Rooks are 3/4? high, 5/8? square on top.
I know it's from Frei because it's on hallmarked on every piece with name and a lion. I also know it's solid sterling because it's tested. But I know nothing of this artist - so any info would be appreciated.
