Just a couple of our finds from our yard here in central IL. Our house was built in 1867!
The "medal" is from a railroad opening celebration in NY. I found a couple of newspaper articles that referred to the celebration but no info on the medal.
The "animal" appears to be a sheep or ram to me. ?? Pretty heavy maybe led? Something may have been tied around the body as it is very skinny looking animal.
Any information on either is appreciated!

Nice find-- it is a piece of an original souvenir medal celebrating the opening of the subway line.

If you are persistent, I'd expect a complete medal to come up on ebay in the next year or so!

I believe that is an anorexic bison. Actually, they were thin "waisted".

Fun finds indeed, keep looking ;D
The top of the metal likely looked something like the one on the link below,

Thanks so much for comments. We have always enjoyed history and these pieces have intrigued us since finding them in the dirt. Especially the medal as it makes us wonder how it may have ended up here in a corn field basically. I have found the newpaper articles mentioning the celebration in 1908. But nothing about the medal or what the 100 might mean. Thanks again. "Anorexic Bison" is funny! I thought the said the same thing to my husband.
