I have a few of these. They are for holding ladies' gloves to a purse handle.
I cleaned mine with a soft toothbrush after a short soak in water with a little dish soap, then dry with a soft cloth. Put a dab of oil on the chain and slide the ball part qently a few time till it works smoothly to release or tighten on the gloves.
It's been a few years since I tried to research but I think they were made in 1950s.
They work nicely and keep your gloves handy.

Also, it should have a clasp on the ends of the chain but your have been broken off.
Maybe you could get the clasp replaced so you can use it.

Ok, so I cleaned it up some and got it moving. I put a glove in it and posted another picture
The clip would be where my hand is and that would clip to a purse. Right?

Thank you so much for the info!!! I knew I could count on the collectors weekly people!!!

Yes! But tighten it up by sliding the ball toward the glove till its snug- so the glove won't fall out.
I've seen only a few online--some call the round part a "marble", another calls it "Bakelite".
I need to refresh my memory on the easy test for Bakelite..it has something to do with the way it smells when warmed up by rubbing it briskly.
Bakelite or marble, I don't care; I just think they are different and cool.
One seller listed theirs as 1920s but others didn't list a date.

I used a jewelry cleaning cloth and got my metal parts clean and shiny. Yours should clean up nicely.
I've found that I need to hold onto the chains as I slide the ball because the chains will begin to get twisted. If the twist, you can straighten them by slowly opening and closing while holding chains steady.
Isn't it kinda fun to have? :-)

Gillian, I hope all that plus that new picture explains the thing.

Thank you for all of the great info. I never would have figured it out since there are not any exactly like this one on line.

When I got my first one, I had a bright idea of repurposing it to be a bracelet but they are just not made with chains long enough.
I'm glad I could help you!
