Looking for some help, yet again. I want to know if I actually found something that is crazy old, or is this just how it was made. In the last picture I circled in red what appears to be some kind of lettering, but I can not make anything out of it. I don’t know if it’s in a different language or what. I can tell you that it’s extremely heavy and it looks like the brown might actually be painted on, which makes me think the crackled design was intended and not a sign of age. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

I would expect to see signs of wear from normal use on an old one. Especially on the bottom. This doesn't seem to show signs of wear.

That is a very good point, it’s almost too perfect.

I could be way off here, it reminds me of some mid century Vallauris fat lava jugs. I had one in shades of blue and black, with a very similar crackle glaze

I think you might be on to something here. This look very similar. Mine is lacking a signature though, so I have no idea.

No, it isn't "crazy old." It could have been made last week, or last year, though, since "old" is relative.

It was made by pressing lumps of firm clay into a mold (or several molds, depending on the final form). The are smoothed together on what will be the inside of the finished piece, but not pressed hard enough to smooth out the edges of the lumps on what will be the outside of the pot. That's why the finished piece is heavy...it requires thicker sides than something made in a poured clay, or slip cast mold.

There is no relation at all to the fat lava glaze, because this pot isn't glazed. After it is fired, the pot is dipped in paint, which is then wiped off, leaving the edges accentuated by the paint left in all the little crevices between the lumps. That's what creates the "aged" look.

It's a souvenir, or decorative, piece, although I guess the term "decorative" could also be considered relative. : )

Thank you so much billretirecoll! That is extremely helpful and now the signature on the bottom makes sense. I will consider this a lucky find then, cause it really is a cool looking piece and and I now know what it is and where it came from. Totally excited to learn this, thanks again!
