Help with identifying this piece of wood please. It is very solid, but not too heavy, looks like it has hard some carving done on it. Your thumb and fingers can hold it almost like a bowling ball but it is not round. I just have no idea if is an art piece of some kind. Have no idea what type of wood or area it came from. Thanks for help with this mystery!

The grain looks like sycamore wood, the hole looks like a wire was rubbing a branch and the branch grew around the wire. Common occurrence up north but never seen one in the south.

Ok thanks for your input. I didn't even think of that! I will research a bit in that direction.

It looks like a piece of burl wood gone wrong.
    4. fhrjr2 fhrjr2, 4 years ago
shareurpassion when something like this happens to growing wood it forms a natural burl to protect itself just like our bodies form scabs over a scratch or cut.

I have researched some sycamore burl wood but haven't found anything close to this. Any other ideas?

I'm tending to agree with the others that it is/was some kind of naturally (or unnaturally as one might also term it) burl from some kind of tree branch.

I'll raise y'all however, that (as awemazed also suggests) that it might have been further carved/whittled on, after maybe somebody long ago actually freed it from whatever situation caused the burl to form in the first place. Imagine if you will, while somebody someplace was trimming trees or removing an old fence or any such thing, then while doing so happened to notice the one odd branch that had grown weirdly around something else...then that branch (or just the interesting knotty part of it) got tossed aside...eventually ending up on somebody's front porch for grampa (or whoever) to take to whittling on while otherwise enjoying the porch swing...??

OK...maybe I'm just getting way too fanciful...people *also* do make "art" (if not actual 'furniture') out of similarly odd/unique bits of tree branches don't they, and have done so for many many decades...??? <lol>

It's a truly NIFTY chunk of wood, no matter what it really is and how it really originated -- I'd keep it too?!! :-) :-) :-)

[and while I'm otherwise rambling on...did anybody else see "Mick Jagger lips" at first glance of awemazed first pic...??? <ROTFLMAO> ]

Thanks All for the comments! Yes, anythingobscure, I see Mick's lips now!! lol
I have a few items that are so curious to me and I'm a need to know kind of person! LOL For some reason the wood reminds me of some kind of coconut but it is solid so don't think so. Best to All!!
