Not sure what goes in this space? Also don’t know what kind of lid goes on this? I think this cooler is from 1930’s but the label was painted over and when I scraped off the paint it was not decipherable.

Vynil33rpm, I believe you are correct, the bottle cap opener.
mcaruth, I think this is a version of what you've got and that back slot at the top accepted a conduit for the water bath electrical.
