Mastodons were a late ancestor of the mammoth and elephant Actually I am not sure if they were an ancestor or off-shoot. They only went extinct 12,000 years ago and existed along with the mammoths.
The mastodon was a bit smaller although there was some overlap in size. The diet is somewhat different as the mastadon ate shrubs and twigs while the mammoth ate grass and leaves.
The last photo shows the size difference. This is one of their better figures I am thinking.
Thanks for the share and info. I love the prehistoric stuff. I didn't realize they existed not that long ago. I mean relatively considering the age of dinosaurs and the earth in general.
