Sometimes, you have to treat yourself….when something special comes along, & you know it’s an opportunity not to be missed. Life is too short!
So even though this was far from a bargain, it was just within my budget for a significant acquisition. And because I remain open minded, I can handle a little damage within reason if it makes that special item affordable.
Here we have a magical piece of Secessionist art glass, in a marbled type glass with applied cabochons & gilding. The vase has an unusual rhomboidal form. The exact colour is difficult to define, a swirling amalgam of browns & golden tones that effectively imitate polished semiprecious stone. As can be seen there is a minor loss to one of the tiny oval shaped cabochons, & a small chippy chunk out of the base. Still displays so impressively!
The vase measures a petite 13 cm tall, but the glass is thick & surprisingly heavy for the diminutive size.
The seller had this identified as Joseph Riedel.
Circa 1900.
