1930s Cast Iron Twine Holder
3 1/2"w x 6" tall
Ball- 4"
Picked this up while I was at the show selling. It's a nice twine holder. It has a nice a base and the top half rotates to lock in place. Inside the base, my eye caught this dot pattern. The last picture is blown up and enhanced..appears to be a name, store name or logo? Maybe residual from an embossed sticker?
Before there were ziplock bags, these were in every house and store, even the post office. Butchers would have a hanging ball version to wrap packages of meat. In the 1940s there were ceramic and chalkware versions, usually an animal or figure with a hole in the mouth for twine.
"String was saved and reused, piece-by-piece and tied together to create balls by thrifty homemakers who knew the value of a penny saved. Used by bakers, grocers and storekeepers of all types, string was as common a packaging material back then as plastic bags are today, making it easy to find and save."

Links..so.e chalkware versions..
