There is almost no written record of this decoration; it was only noted in the Lötz company's pattern catalog for a few patterns. Neither the book "Lötz" (Ricke) nor the book "Lötz" (Cantz) mentions this decoration. The decoration was only identified later by Warren Galle; see Lötz.com.
The same vase also exists in the "Oceanic" decoration, which was created in the same year. The two decorations differ only in that the green gradient is missing in the Oceanic version.
This once again demonstrates the Lötz company's special talent for how small changes can lead to a new decoration.
There are two possibilities for the origin of the decoration's name: either the simpler and probably more accurate one, that in Spanish, the name Esmeralda means emerald or gemstone.
The second possibility is the character from Victor Hugo's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," the dancer "La Esmeralda." Perhaps both are related: the color comes from the gemstone, and the wave-like movement from this dancer.

I really appreciate your thoughtfulness in trying to find the origins of Loetz's decor names. I try to do this too, and appreciate your insights.
