Nice .......After looking at the item, my consenses is that the item is more than likely a type of ivoryThe patina give the appearance of being circa late 19th or early 20th centuy. The item has a pony with a frog atop. I particularly noticed a symbol carved on the bottom. You should take a closer look at it to determine the name of the maker and or the century and region it was created.

Each Netsuke deplicts animals and or other items a associated with mythical beliefs. Fine antique netsuke can be identified by its intricate design and use of pricey materials such as ivory (which was not illegal in the 17th through 19th centuries), jade, or precious stones. Cheaper netsuke is carved out of wood or bone.

CWPOST, thank you for your kindness in gifting me with more knowledge with netsuke pieces! I bought this Antique Ivory Horse with frog a long time ago. I love the piece. After your comment I took it to the Jewelry store and had them authenticate the carved bone. They confirmed that it is indeed Ivory and not cheap Ox bone. I was very glad because I paid a lot for this Netsuke and it came out of an old antique dealer. Thank you for your great comment . Iearned a lot:). Lee
