This is one of the finest micro mosaic brooches (in its own kind) that I've seen so far beside my earlier brooches I already showed on this site; my peasant lady on cushion, the bug pendant, Biedermeier flower brooch, Etruscan ring and of course my "private dancer".
This actual brooch is in mind condition, no missing tesserae and also the Onyx is intact, no cracks at all. The setting is 14 K gold and has wonderful decoration, all in red gold, the flat back in yellow gold. Measures: 5 x 4.2 cm (2 x 1.1"). The tesserae are so small the pigeons and flowers seem to be painted ! In my opinion probably made around 1850. Is this brooch ment to be a mourning jewel do you think? Can you tell me something more about this kind of brooches?
I was surprised to see one of my Micro Mosaic brooches (also mentioned here on Collectorsweekly) on a film about this subject. If you want to learn more you can link to: http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/14896068
I recently discovered that a similar brooch as this one auctioned at Christies in London for a remarkable amount see link:

Oh this is just stunning!!! A very lovely piece!!
Thanks tdvintagecompany and AR8Jason for your comment, of course I agree!
Oh I am so jealous! This is absolutely beautiful. Micromosaic is a passion of mine, too. Such fine work. I would hazard a guess that this brooch would be a love token rather than a mourning piece, as the colours are so vibrant, and the two birds are usually doves, a symbol of love and peace. I think you are bang on with the date. What a suoer thing to own, lucky you!
Gorgeous Agram !!
Thanks Jobug2 and Hedgewalker. As you say one of my top pieces! And what is also so very stunning, there are no cracks or scratches. It looks like new!
Lisa you missed these beautiful two doves
Another stunning musual brooch in mint condition. I saw one almost the same on Christies auctions. I'm still wondering if this is a mourning brooch or a message of lovers?? Who knows the answer??
