This is a garage sale find. "A silent butler (or crumb catcher) is a container with a handle and a hinged cover, used for collecting table crumbs or emptying ashtrays" (wiki).
I think the lid is made of brass and the bottom is silver or silver plated. It's not heavy though.
I'm trying to get an idea on its possible maker and probable age. Resources i looked up say there were many makers of such items back then and that Sheffield as about the only maker worth collecting (value-wise). I also can't seem to find a more precise age of this item besides the words like "vintage", "antique" or "bygone era"...1990's is a bygone era, too, so that's not helpful =/
Does anyone familiar with such items recognize this particular model? Any leads would be very appreciated! Thanks for stopping by.
It was all plated at one point, but vigorous cleaning removed much of the plating on the lid.
Celiene, wow, i would have never guessed it! It doesn't look bad this way, either =)
There was usually a silver or silver plated brush with it.
