I have this beautiful old choker that I love wearing but I'm thinking about restringing it. It's another one from my Grandma's collection, with black Murano glass wedding cake beads decorated with gold foil, the traditional pink "rosebuds" and some blue "flowers" with orange centres.

It's strung on blue (silk?) cord but it's heavy, and I've had a couple of necklaces from this collection break recently. I'd hate to lose any of these beads especially as it's only just long enough to fit round my neck!

Pebble, yes over the years the cord wears out - understandable :-)

Thanks valentino and letilka for the love!
Valentino, that's what I'm worried about. I'm thinking beading wire would be better for these due to the weight, and I've read that glass beads can cut through cord if the edges are sharp. I like the blue colour shining through the clear beads though.
Ironically, the last one that broke (thankfully in the house when I picked it up) was strung on wire, but it had rusted right through in several places!

Pebble - it's up to you. Silk, cotton threads have best drape - but honestly after 20 yrs of this....your best economical thread would be from Fireline (fishing line - I would use 8lb test). You can find this at Walmart. I would go thru the beads 4 times. There is also a really great product called SoftFlex. For your heavy beads I would use "medium, diameter .019 in. 49 strand" - it's about $12 for 30 ft spool.

One last comment: using the above threads, you have to invest in some good crimp beads - they should be big enough that 4 rows of fireline 8 or 2 of softflex medium will pass through. I can't remember the size - my preference is sterling 2mm round. Don't scrimp on your crimp! There is nothing more frustrating than getting to the end of the project and having it break in your lap.

      I love old beads!!!

Oh sorry....no Walmart in Scotland? But, I think you have a lot of fishing....

Hi valenitno97, thanks for the advice, any input is appreciated! That's what I love about this site.
No Walmart in Scotland, but plenty beading shops here have Fireline, and probably plenty of fishing shops too ;)
I'm lucky enough to have a well stocked bead/jewellery supplies shop nearby, and I will heed your advice on crimps - I promise not to scrimp!!

"Don't scrimp on your crimp!" Words to live by!

      It's a good motto Celiene, isn't it?
Feafinder, thanks - all the pink swirls are different, I can spend too long looking at them!

Ha ha ha - it has happened to me, at the end of a project and the crimp breaks....I want to cry for all the time spent...cussing first of course....:-)
