this is a tall table - around 4 ft - which an elderly friend showed me today. she's from an old and well-known family here in the Bay Area and wants to get rid of a bunch of stuff, so she asked me to help her. i thought that this table looked Japanese, but i'm not sure.

I thought it was Japanese too when I first saw it. Looking at the first two pics for a moment, seemed to clean up pretty good, wood soap and good lemon polish works wonders...but then I saw the third pic and thought absolutely looks Japanese to me too!
thanks Rick and shareurpassion! that's the perfect name for it Rick. i'm leaning pretty far towards French Japonisme at this point - and may have been made by a Japanese artist in Paris. the frog is definitely a Japanese style frog.
