My mom purchased this trunk in Connecticut at an auction 50 years ago. They claimed it was owned by Mark Twain. Inside is filled with old pictures as you can see. How do I find out if it's authentic? It's been sitting in our basement and in pretty bad shape. There is also spectacles in a case inside.

I am wondering if you can get a closer photo of the photos/ non sport trading cards. Not able to read any information written on them.
Hard to read but some names are General Nelson A Miles Cam-in -Chief US Army, General Horace Port, Ambassador to France, E.H. Congen, US Minister to China, Hon J B Forkarer, Ex-Governor of Ohio, Lyman J Gage, Seretary of Treasury and more. Does that help?

Interesting trunk-- looks like tobacco cards glued to the trunk top.
The "Mark Twain" story sounds like seller hype. If you have some documentation/ supporting evidence in the trunk itself-- it may be worth investigating. If the attribution is solely based on the 50 year old story, you're out of luck.

I will do some more checking on the names, it looks like you have an assortment of famous American generals, ( Civil War and.. ) and the ladies possibly early entertainment/ movie starlettes and world flags cards
I have some of the cards or most all of them as I have the albums. On these I think they are Brooke Bond from the 50's or 60's and may be famous persons and inventors albums and also royalty, unfortunately my albums are put away right now.
Love the cards giving it colour.
At least some of the cards are from 1896 to 1900 like the McKinley and Teddy Roosevelt (lower center)

if it was me i would leave them be cause it probally distroy the cards but find out everything about the trunk and cards first then if some one could take cards off not destroying them in any way that be nice

Hey Mjurgelas, first of all lets talk about the trunk, this style of trunk which is a round top or barrel top cross slat design, top wood slats running from front to back and was first patented in 1880 by C A Taylor. This style of trunk was very common and was made by hundreds of trunk makers, your trunk was probably made some where around late 1890's up to 1915, without a makers label, which most trunks didn't have, it impossible to say who, where, or pinpoint a date as to when it was made as this style was made for around 40 years or so. The cards if they had any value at any time is gone, because they have been glued into the trunk and are considered damaged beyond collectors value. I doubt that the trunk belonged to Mark Twain, if it did, you would have to have solid documentation, provenance, without that you have nothing, but the word of an auctioneer from 50 years ago. greendog
I don't know if I agree. The flag/dominos trading cards were produced in 1901 by the Kinney Bros to promote their cigarettes. They produced 106 of each and were hand cut from original cartons of cigarettes. I can only find 5 online and 2 of them are in the Metropolitan Museum of Art donated in 1960. I have 20 of them and can't find the other 15 online anywhere. I would auction the trunk with all cards attached but think I may have something.
You are entitled to your opinion, but as a card collector for over 50 years, I know that the value of cards goes up and down drastically, and the market is soft, unless you have a super rare card, then you are subject to condition, condition, condition. I don't think the cards at the Metropolitan Museum of art are glued into a trunk, and I don't think you will find a serious collector that will buy a trunk with cards glued in it, but good luck with that, I wish all the best. greendog
