I bought this from an elderly man at a local flea market. He told me that it was given to him as a boy by his Grandfather, and It was old even then. There are no identifying name or model anywhere , so I have no way to track it's manufacturer, or it's age, which looks to be from the late 1800's or early 1900's. It is in excellent condition for it's age, with no damage at all, just the patina that old metal and wood acquire with time.
He told me that they collapsed so you could get them on the trolley when traveling to and from the sledding hills. If they didn't fold up, the trolley conductor would not let you on the trolley with it.
It steers like today's sleds steer, by twisting the front of the runners. It also steers by setting a blade down into the snow as you twisted the runners (see photo #4). It opens up for use in seconds and locks into the open position as it doesn't collapse during a trip down the hill.
This sled was kept in such great condition over the years, that my wife and I have it displayed on the foyer wall.

They used to find these semi often when the Antique pickers from Canada went on their trips. They do make great display.
