Absolutely awesome KJL lion brooch, he's so regal and beautiful! What a gorgeous mane of cascading cabochons, and love that big green rhinestone eye. A real winner Lori, congrats on a most excellent find

      Is this from the 1990's?

Lovely piece Lori! This Lion is well known and loved...
Yes, Mary, it is. Most likely from 1997-on..
The hallmark is from QVC, and before someone jumps down my throat implying different. I have done research, and 7, count them 7, different jewelry sites, including “ Costume Jewelry Collectors International”, state this fact. Kenneth Jay Lane never retired a piece, so this wonderful lion, has been remade for decades. In the late 90’s, he “hawked” his most famous pieces and made a fortune on QVC, ( home shopping club) Going on the air for 4 hours bi- monthly, he sold $3 million dollars worth of jewelry every month! Do the math! If you have a piece with “China” or “Thailand” on the back, it is from 2000 on, and is not vintage, it’s contemporary. Pieces marked ”Made in USA”, are of much finer quality, made for The Franklin Mint. Seller’s are pushing his contemporary pieces as “vintage” and that’s just wrong. Just so we’re straight, KJL jewelry is beautiful, no matter what decade his pieces were made, but the quality of his early pieces stand out, no question, though pieces from The Franklin Mint are also of high quality.
Thanks Lori, I didn’t mean to use your post as a KJL lesson, lol. If one wants KJL contemporary jewelry, that’s fine. I just want people to know what they are buying...
Me? I prefer the older pieces like I say in my profile...

Hello. So maybe I missed s0mething here - but I don't recall that I said this piece was vintage and if you look at the back side of the brooch closely you would see the CHINA mark. therefore this make it after 2000 and yes it was massed produced for QVC. Lori

It seems that some where along the way, the posting on the CW "Show and Tell" posting has taken a different direction amongst the collectors.

I started posting on CW as a way to share my items, browse through the many other items posted, hoped to learn from the experience and even make a few friends along the way that shared in the same hobby as I do.

That's how I understand (from the CW Help page )that describes "HOW DOES SHOW AND TELL WORK".

The use of the Show and Tell is only an avenue for us to SHARE our items. There is not specific instructions that denote we must research and chronicle our findings in our post. As a matter fact the instruction only refer too telling as much as we can (minimum 30 words). If there are some that want me to document everything I have researched on my posy for others to judge my knowledge and not to enjoy my post. then I have the wrong concept of CW.

I will continue to share my collections as I have, if my post are not up to someone else expectations, pass on by.

      Lori,
To be honest, I did not see the “China” hallmark , and in no way was imputing your piece. I was trying to answer Mary’s question. There has been questions whether the hallmark with the “c” in front of KJL with no periods was indeed made for QVC. I did a lot of research, and found this to be true. Another piece of his was posted, with the “China” carefully omitted , calling it “a very rare book piece” . False info given can cause a novice to purchase something they think is vintage, but is not. And that’s just not fair. You are right, this is a sharing site, which includes info ( if you know) about your piece.
How I wish people who read comments can understand the sentiment behind them too, alas that’s not possible. You read words, and got the wrong impression. Like I said in my comment, I love KJL jewelry from any decade. And I have a piece from QVC from a very dear friend. I did not in any way undermine your post, I told you your Lion was / is well known and loved. It’s a gorgeous “classic” piece. How lucky we are that this man never retired a piece! I also apologized for using your post to make a point about the hallmark. You can delete any comment, feel free to delete this after you have read it, and my original comment too. No hard feelings....

Eileen - please do not think I aimed my comment at you. It just so happened that you responded before me. I apologize if I sounded as though it was your input that I was addressing.

I was included (via email) with the banter earlier between several CW posters that I felt was unwarranted. By the time I got to answer the comments, it had stewed and I let it out. Hopefully the issue is over and we can all once again share. Sorry Eileen if I hurt you, unintentional. I respect your opinions and love your commentary, in fact I look forward them.

Everyone else - please take my comment in the positive way it was intended and let keep posting. Thank you, Lori

Lori, I was horrified to think you believed I was “attacking” your Lion. I am so relieved that isn’t the case. I would never resort to insults/ offensive remarks/ name calling as in the past I have been called names on several occasions by one in particular. I was just answering Mary’s question, and trying to get the right info out there for those who collect vintage KJL! This site has no room for childish remarks ( unless in fun), snide remarks, or name calling. I’m glad all is well between us dear.....though I’m confused, “ banter through email”. About what?

Lori, I am just seeing these comments. I'm sorry too that I like to know as much as possible about every post. I want honesty "this is new, but it's really great and why I posted". Sorry, and many of our friends will agree - as soon as anything is posted on CW online sellers read and use our knowledge to jack up prices on things they sell, especially if there is a signature. As an example - I want to know more research before I buy this Lion online just based on KJL signature.
I don't mean to sound harsh, I just think every post should have the basics: Size, how item was attained, front/back views AND at least a bit of research. If I don't know, I'm going to say "I don't know, help appreciated".

I am also wondering what you mean about "banter through email". How do I become part of this? LOL

Valentino97 - thank you for taking the time to explain some of the issue with the posting and research. I started with CW as a way to learn and to share, thankfully I have experienced both from all the CW folks - I can respect the points you bring up and if I was too brass - I apoogize.
It seems that we all understand each of the others' opinions and I agree that if there is any information known at the time of the posting then yes, please include it. Let's keep doing the good post we have done, and let's all enjoy. thank you. Loti
