Dupont got their start as a manufacturer of gunpowder. Notice the stamp on the lid too. It's marked with E. I. Dupont de Nemours Inc, which i think is the original name of the company. I assume that this is from right around 1900, but might be a little earlier. I have no idea what the '$5.00' mark means, but that's what i paid for it.
