This cast iron ashtray is roughly 7" square x 1" high and weighs 2 lbs. It commemorates the Japanese wind god, Fujin. I have seen a couple of versions of this ashtray, some with molded grooves to hold cigarettes or cigars. Stamped "JAPAN" on the back.

In good shape I have seen this one sell for over $100 and they are impressive hunks of cast iron. More than I will ever pay for one, for sure. I found this one a few weeks ago severely rusted with a deep crust of surface rust for only $7 so decided to see if I could save it. After hours of buffing with my Big 45 metal cleaning pad and some Mobile 1 motor oil, I was not making much headway, so I finally decided to just fill it with Mobile 1 and let it sit for several days. That worked surprisingly well.

Though severely pitted, I am slowly getting it cleaned up and saving what original finish is salvageable, but in addition to the rust I have to work my way through two layers of paint (red and black) that someone applied to it. The original finish was a smooth black finish, possibly similar to what was applied to iron teapots of this period. The bottom still has the original finish largely intact. I will keep at it and update my images when I finally admit defeat. I may just paint it when I am done cleaning it as it doesn't have any collectible value as is.

No idea which foundry made this.

Thanks for your comment, Jenni! Japanese gods typically look pretty monstrous!

Thanks for you comments, jscott0363! You should see one that is not all pitted! It looks like this one was painted, so some of the distortion may be from crinkled paint that got rust under it. Since it is basically not a candidate for restoration and is pretty screwed up already, I may sandblast it and paint it.

Thanks for loving my Furin ashtray fortapache, jscott0363, BHIFOS, Vynil33rpm, Kevin, dav2no1, Jenni and AnythingObscure!
