    this thing looks like it hangs,it opens with a twist,made of heavy metal and looks like you would put something inside.i realy have no clue what it is do you

      How big is it? It looks like a old bee cage for posting.
      They use to send queen bees in the post in cages like the one you have.

      What I read is that this is an Antique Cast Iron General Store String Dispenser
      Ball with open lattice pattern shaped in two halves the twist together
