Here is a sampling of Trench Art canteens from the Spanish American War era to WW2.
The central canteen is from the Spanish American War era. It has a canvas cover that has been decorated with a central patriotic shield design. The artwork has been added to both sides of the canteen.
Upper left is a US WW1 aluminum canteen that has been engraved with oak leaves and branches on one side and a piece of fruit on the other.
Upper right is a WW2 captured Japanese canteen that has ben engraved with a local "Luzon" scene on one side and a presentation on the back.
All three represent soldier or artist handiwork in turning WAR REFUSE into decorative souvenirs of service.

Thats cool that the WWI canteen has a threaded cap too
Looks like the spanish civil war one would of had a strap on it
The threaded cap became a standard for US canteens around WW1 (and continues today).
I find it interesting that SOME WW2 Japanese canteens still have a cork seal (like the one pictured).
