A most unusual 48 star flag. It is actually three pieces. The field of stars is 6 rows by 8 columns. The red and white stripes to the right of the field are actually sewn through the 9th column. you can see part of them. Then that whole section is sewn to the red and white stripes on the bottom.
Has anyone else seen one like this?

very odd, but cool!
This is an "oops" but no I have not seen a mistake like this. It shouldn't have been let out of the factory but maybe the Quality Control people were sleeping in that day?
Unfortunately, unlike coins where "oops" means higher prices, I think this is little more than a curiosity.
Disregarding the "oops" facter for a moment, have you seen three part flags ? I don't think I have...
Let me answer my own question...apparently that was the norm, "back in the day" ! Live and learn...

Yes, but not many. These were cheaply done and accounts for the oops. Again really surprising as it is obviously an opps and it would have been hard to sell on of all things a flag.
It this was a 50 star flag I would say it was made in China and they labors there had little pride in making an non-Chinese object. As a 48 start flag, it is unlikely. We did not deal with Communist China much between 1946 and 1959.
It still would likely have been made in another country as I don't see a seamstress here missing the fact the 9th row shows and anyone thinking it would sell.
The funny thing is it did sell to some extent, as you have ended up with it some 50 years after manufacture.
The best flags were sewn stars and stripes. Cheaper were the printed stars and sewn stripes. Three piece flags and printed ones were the cheapest, and didn't last, so in effect, there are rarer in good shape.
I have a (two actually) 49 star flag printed sheet with several flags to cut apart of differing sizes, which was sold through JC Pennys, intact and in original packaging. A 49 star flag would be quite rare, and in a sewn version would be fantastic to find. Printed ones are rare as well, but I would much prefer a large sewn one and it would much more valuable.
Then I will sell it as an extrordinarily rare 48.6 star flag !
Interesting stuff. You never know what you're going to find on Collector Weekly's
Show & Tell.
nice flag
I found a 48 star flag in Kentucky at Peddler's Mall, a resale outlet. I'm almost sure it covered a veteren's casket from World War II. The best I can remember it was all hand sewn. I didn't care what the price...I didn't like seeing it thrown around the shelves like a old rag, so I bought it .
Auntie ... size?
5' by 9' is casket size.
As a vet and someone that takes pride in our flag, Thank You!
