For the antique car collector who needs a clock.

    Henry L. Lang
    Jeweler
    Staunton,VA
    Est. 1885

Lang’s history goes back to the days when Henry L. Lang, an engraver and watchmaker by trade, who came to Staunton, VA. in 1885 and opened a jewelry store on property he purchased on the corner of Beverley and Augusta Streets. He sold this building in 1895 and moved his store to its present location at 11 West Beverley Street in Staunton, Virginia.
Mr. Lang was a gifted engraver who took pride in his work and  was also one of the first licensed optometrists in Virginia.  He operated his business as a jeweler and an optometrist for 55 years, until his death in early 1940.

In 1910, in a magazine named, The Horseless Age, Volume XXVI, New York, July 20, 1910, Number 3, Lang advertised his new invention of the:
    Simplex Watch Holder. It reads:
"H. L. Lang of Staunton, VA. is manufacturing the watch holder illustrated here-with, which enables a motorist to clip his pocket watch securely to a spoke of the steering wheel. the holder is of very neat design, and will, no doubt, prove popular."
(“the watch holder illustrated here-with”, is the side of the box above with the watch attached to the steering wheel spoke).

Shown above, with the Simplex Watch Holder, is a “Dollar Watch” by Ingersoll, named: “Traveler” with an illuminated dial, so it could be seen in the dark.

If you were fortunate enough to have owned one of these vehicles in 1910, you had the opportunity to purchase one of H. L. Lang’s Simplex Watch Holders to attach to your steering wheel and clip your own pocket watch in place so you could keep track of the time while traveling.

      Dave,
Really enjoy your post on this watch. Your research and the telling of the item made it all so much more interesting. As an owner of an antique car that has no such added amenity's as they now have, that people don't give any thought to, I found it very informative. Thank you for the post and the time it took to produce it in full.

Padit, thanks for the comment. The "watch holder" is adjustable to fit different size pocket watches (see back of holder in photo #1). Pocket watch was not supplied with the "holder".
I would enjoy seeing a post of your antique car.
