I found some great stuff at the thrift this week! Finally!!
Example one: Japanese Owl Radio Works perfectly!
This one is so cool, that even my hubby wants me to keep it.
Now some believe that this was modeled after Bubo of Clash of the Titans fame. I am not sure, keep finding conflicting information.
Funny story, I almost missed his feet! The lady who handed me this fella, didn't include his feet. I almost missed them but saw them at the last minute. I illegally snuck behind the counter to grab them...a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do...

Yes! very cool!..:-)
love the owl!
This is from the 1960's - predates Clash of the Titans by about 15 years
By Zeus, it is Bubo!
Bubo (three sizes – one armatured, one mechanical and one very small)
http://www.rayharryhausen.com/filmography.php
"Being the genius that he is, Perseus quickly loses his helmet of invisibility in a swamp. Zeus then decides that a replacement gift should be given to him. Typical Zeus, always playing favorites with his toys... condemning some to eternal torture and giving others godly gifts. Anyway, Zeus commands Athena to send her magical owl "Bubo" to help Perseus. Loving the owl far too much to let it go to some puffy-lipped human, she decides to build a replica robotic owl to send to him instead. What, you didn't think there were robots in Greek mythology? Pfft, guess that shows how much YOU know.
What's great about Bubo is he only communicates with people through a bunch of whistles, bleeps and bloops and many have compared him to R2-D2 because of this. Furthermore, much like Luke can understand anything R2 says, Perseus can easily understand anything of the noises that Bubo makes too. (For the record, Bubo was created before "Star Wars".) To this day many people hate Bubo the owl because it seems like something that was added to the story just to entertain kids. Personally, I like Bubo simply because the concept is so ridiculous and laughable."
Maybe Ray had one of these when he were a kid in his bedroom?
Nah, he was too old for that!
Maybe someone else on the crew?
David Knowles?
haha, Bubo from Clash of the Titans, isn't it?
Well, it also reminds me of the mechanical one at the Casanova movie from the 70s (with Donald Sutherland as Casanova) :)
By the way, here is the real Bubo... so lovely! http://mythsandmisadventures.blogspot.com.es/2012/04/titans-wrath-is-nothing-compared-to.html
I have to confess, as a teenager i started quite a large collection of... owl figurines :)
OMG they really do look alike! I had a vague idea in my head! Hubby took a photo and has been texting it to all of our...lets say "more comic book friendly" friends. Bubo is causing quite a stir.
Thank you for all the love and quotes and links.
Tony, the radio is only FM so I am in heavy agreement with you on age.
I meant AM...honestly between auto correct and my own mistakes, it's a wonder I get anything coherent out at all!
UPDate: Midnight Owl made in 1965 by Vision Electronics of Japan
Love this radio! I've been looking locally for one for years. I think it was put out as a riff on this radio and it's rep: http://radiojayallen.com/zenith-royal-500-series-transistor-radios-%E2%80%93-the-%E2%80%9Cowl-eye%E2%80%9D-radios/
I see: "Vision Electronics Midnight Owl; Designed as creme colored owl, their eyes are used as tuning and volume controls, gold anodized aluminum wings. The "Midnight Owl" is like Bubo from Clash of the Titans, an American 1981 fantasy–adventure film involving the Greek hero Perseus. It was released on June 12, 1981 and earned a gross profit of $41 million domestically, on a $15 million budget. A novelization of the film by Alan Dean Foster was published in 1981. Warner Bros. released a remake of the film in 3D on April 2, 2010. But this radio has been made more than a decade before this film. It could be a Fred Roberts item, made in Japan, sold by Sears, Roebuck. On the other hand it has a MITI Japan 611 code which was (at least also) WACO. "
FABULOUS!!!
Really cool find -- love it!!!
hi amber ,does it play more than just the WHO
Hey, I've been wanting one of these for a long time. Must be hard to locate, I will have to check your windowsill to see if it is available !!~
Hi Phil, since it is so cold, windows are closed. All he does is peck at the windows.
I would gift him to you but I love him too much. Plus the hubby actually likes one of my finds...banner moment. Someday I will find you the perfect gift.
No trouble just wanted to ruffle your feathers, I was under the impression after looking this up a couple months ago that there may have been some reproductions of the famous bird in the movie, but only the wise owl knows, as I have not found proof.
See, this is the only problem with this site. I have now gone online and ordered one of these! I love seeing everyone's beautiful things, but then I have to fight the urge to buy them. In this case, the urge won! Thanks for sharing AMBER ROSE:)
They are cool pieces indeed. I have had a few of them, but they've all had gold wear. Yours looks to be in great shape. Nice pick!
Neat and very diffrent!
