Greetings: I purchased this in Germany about 15 years ago. It appears to be signed "eg", which is one of many ways Emile Galle signed his work, especially the smaller pieces where he did not have the area to fully spell out his last name. It is 5" tall. Using a loop, I drew out the marking on the metal base - I have not yet identified the metal-worker. Regards.

I've never seen an Emile Galle cameo signed EG like that -could there be more to the signature obscured by the metal work?

Greetings manddmoir: Thanks for your comment. I really don't think there is any additional signature under the metal - the "g" is not obsured at all and nothing follows the "g". Please refer to Victor Arwas' book on glass, pg. 151, where an "eg" signature to referred to. Regards.

      Hi
yes he signed e g ok - no doubt -but I've never seen it on this kind of cameo -usually e g appears only on earlier pieces. 'In cameo' signature almost always say just Galle

it also looks like there is a giant mold line running thru the signature?

Hi manddmoir: I agree with you that "Galle" was to most prominent way his works were signed. But as you suggest, on earlier pieces, as well as smaller pieces, he sometimes signed "eg". Regards.

Greetings Greatsnowyowl: I examined the line you refer to both under a strong light, as well as a magnifying glass - and really cannot tell if the line you refer to is due to mold or pancake syrup.

Joke - joke - joke ( I thought a little levity might be in order).

      :)

all I wanted to write was the smiley but it doesn't let you do that.

Actaully a mould line on Galle cameo is not a big issue they are quite common on such pieces -admittedly pancakes syrup is less common. However I don't think this is early enough to have a EG signature -its 2nd period- also they did not cameo EG they were engraved usually on the base.

      Hi Mike & Nootch
Looks to be "fire polished" which would put it as fairly early for a cameo piece ... also appears to have a framed background (the white and purple ?stripes) ... Which is not a part of later designs ... Not sure about earlier ones ...
      Cheers

      Hi
yes its definitely fire polished, but that doesn't really help a lot with the date - they did fire polishing over a long period. Very early fire polish are ususlly signed on the bottom with very complex signatures.
