My friend bought this at an estate sale. I am unable to locate ANY information about the "Eddison" company. Does anyone know anything about this company or this fire extinguisher? I believe it is made out of brass.

Ah, some thing interesting after looking at unsold yard sale stuff! Does it pump up? I think they used soda in these really early ones. Well, I like it.

That's really a cool piece, I haven't seen one like it. Looks like possibly blunderbuss is right, soda acid activated, and very early and valuable piece!

Thanks, Guys. I've been struggling to find any record of Eddison (with two d's) as a manufacturer. So intriguing. It is in amazing shape. Like someone had it in his attic for the last 120 years. Way cool.

"Way cool" is a good way to put it & certainly better than being forced to suffer thru Tupperware parties. Good poste & well appreciated.

This is Bill Doak, editor of the East Hartford Gazette. I thonk I found some information about this fire extiguisher that may be helpful. In the March 2, 1888 issue of the Gazette is the following under the small column headline "An Est Hartford Invention: "The Eddison Fire Extinguisher, which was invented in East Hartford, is having wonderful success and a large stock company has been formed, composed of rich business men from New York, with an office on Courtland Street, to carry on the manufacture and sale of the machines. They are now being turned our rapidly in large quantities and the demand for them increases as their merits become known. The Hoffman House in New York has removed its former extinguishers and substituted this one, as the managers were convinced of its superiority over anything in the market. L.W. Godfrey was one of the first to recognize the merits of the invention and took an interest from the start. The machine is a handsome affair composed of two cylinders..."

OMG! Did your friend who found this at an estate sale sell this at his garage sale? My husband and I were at a sale today and bought this very fire extinguisher with all the telltale marks that are visible in the photos, it has to be the same one! I came to this site looking for info on it and found the very one we just bought, lol, this is too funny! Anyways, I love it and think it is a very cool piece, glad to have found it!
