Hey guys, it's been a while since I've posted any items, and have sold some of my posted collection since then. I've always thought CW was a wonderful sight and have thought it an incredibly helpful reference guide. I've always deleted the items I've sold, but wish there was a way to allow the items to still be a reference for anyone searching for info. I hope I can still keep this necklace posted, even if I do decide to sell it. It has incredible gold filled Repousse bookchain links, with a hidden closure that connects an ornate center frame. The chalcedony pendant is hand with pearl and gold enamel. Let me know what you guys think about adding a reference section. Way too much info gets erased when the owner sells the item or gives it away.

      Lovely piece.

I agree about the reference section. A lot of times even the comments give so much important information from collectors who have years of knowledge and research available.

I'm glad to see a post from you again! I wish there would be more jewellry collectors on CW than there is :). I agree that it's a shame information gets lots. I can understand that if items are on sale it's not good if the post is on CW because I think the quality of the posts would be less good, think they could easily turn into 'adds' rather then a forum where we search for answers. But I wish there would be a way to save the post if you're selling and then you could post it again after it's sold for referens. I do miss some posts from people here that I wanted to have a look at again only to find the posts are gone. It is disappointing.

I have taken to printing some of them and we could also keep a copy of the page on our computers.
      So much knowledge here!

I've given up trying to figure out whether pieces should stay posted here or removed if you are going to sell them. Once an item is removed all the information is lost that could be shared with others, but if you don't remove it, as has been said, then it looks to others as if you are trying to draw business. If this is a site for "pure collectors" who don't sell their things then I guess those of us who may do a little or a lot of either or both are out of luck. It has been a struggle for me to walk that line; I enjoy collecting some things, and some things I pass on to others. I do find the information here helpful to that end when my own research efforts fail. There's a library a few blocks from me but I've given up on it as it doesn't carry many reference books and the books never seem to have the item I need. The main library, well, that is pretty hit and miss, too, as the books often seem to be stolen or missing, or there are a billion and I have no idea which is the best to look at for my purposes. The experts here are so much better than a book, they have knowledge and experience they can share that helps us all learn. Consequently, I leave my items up so that others can learn what I've learned from the people here. And it's also too bad that when people close their accounts so much is lost, not just their threads but the comments they've left on threads, sometimes reading an old thread I detect all these gaps and find it sad that that knowledge is lost. And of course sad that some of our past friends from this site have moved on. Long rambling comment, sorry.

Thank you both, I was glad of the opportunity to get that off my chest. I have sold some items posted on here, I used to remove the item if I intended to sell it, but I decided after thinking about it that I will leave the threads up so that others down the line can learn from the information posted. :)

      Hi Kat & Oldandsilly:

Just to clarify, our policy prohibits items currently for sale from being posted on Show & Tell as a way to prevent this from becoming another craigslist or sales-focused forum. As long as you have the rights to your images, you can post items you own, no longer own, or that you saw in an exhibition, or wherever. Hope that makes sense.

Unfortunately, we do not have much engineer bandwidth to develop new features at the moment, though we are always open to ideas that we may implement down the road.

      best,
      Hunter

CW, then what happens is I have to delete the item and all the information goes with it. My assumption is that as a collector site, you want to share and expand research and information not only amongst "pure" collectors (and BTW almost everyone on here has said they have sold items) but as a resource for the folk who are looking to find information on items they own, inherited, or are curious about. Every time someone is forced to delete an item, that information is gone forever. Also I don't see a whole lot of linkage between CW and eBay, etc. No one aggressively sells here, the members are good about policing the site, and if there's an interest in an item, it's easy enough to connect on these threads. Lots of the members already chat through email and in real life. The way I parsed it out is its an artificial unenforceable barrier, and the positives on the knowledge side outweigh the negatives.

      Hi Katherine,

Part of the reason you don't see the linkage is that we have removed thousands of for-sale postings from the Show & Tell portion of our site. We also feature eBay auctions in every category on CW using filters designed to showcase the best live auctions, however, as you mention, S&T is designed as a place to share information and knowledge. By removing those posts that are simply looking for a financial transaction, we are able to keep it more focused.

We understand it can be frustrating to lose the information others have provided, but you are welcome to copy and save any text that appears on our site—and even to re-port it with your objects after they are sold.

OAS, sure there are workarounds, but seems like a lot of trouble to stuff a mushroom, meaning, the number of people coming in here to lure people to their websites seems very minimal to me, and I am on this page often during the day and nights when I can't sleep. Yes, I see a few people obviously trying to sell their items. But by and large people are posting on here either to share their stuff, or find out about their stuff. Well anyway, I've already talked about this enough. :)

      True that, OAS. :)
