Here is my new restoration project, done!
The pale blue with red dots is John Atkins and Sons.
The vibrant blue with pearls and tiny red eyes is unmarked, lacking pin for the moment...
Both are silver, wings span just under 1.5"
Hope you enjoy them as much I do! ;-)

Kyra, I have a beautiful Marius Hammer butterfly that needs restoration. Do you do this professionally? I have looked around locally but haven't found a qualified person. I will post the picture for your to see...

    You may try my technique!

    Material used for my restorations:

= jewellers fiberglass pencil brush (brand LIBERTY scratch brush fiber glass)
    = nail polish pearly white
= Pébéo painting on glass discovery kit (colors in the kit : crimson, lemon, orange, chartreuse green, sky blue, gold) + Pébéo vitrail (=painting on glass) medium lightening.
= LETRASET Promarker set of 12 colors + blender

    My technique is :

    - clean thoroughly the damaged area (now I use a jeweller fiberglass brush)
    - take a small amount of pearly white nail polish with a tooth pick and apply carefully on the metal only where is the lack of enamel.
    - let dry completely.
    - apply matching color (or blend primary colors on an aluminium sheet to get matching color!) always with a tooth pick, by tiny drops until the damaged area is covered (don't rub, use the tooth pick as a pen to go to the edges of the piece!)
    - apply the medium lightener same way to get an even surface (DON'T RUB...)
    - put the piece in cold ELECTRIC oven, start fan heat up to 65° celsius, allow to dry for 15/20 minutes.
    - When cold, check it's non finger sticky, then use the fiber glass brush lightly to create the same effect than the existing enamel surface.

    That's all!!!

That's brilliant... I am going to give it a try on my bracelet first. :)

Good to have try on not expensive pieces! Have a look in crafts shops to get the right color from paint on glass stuff and permanent markers!
When I need special colors for small repairs, I bring my piece to the store and use testers pens on it ;-)

You are awesome... I love all your jewelry too...

I wasn't able to find Pebeo in the couple of stores near my home and bought another brand... I think I m going to go ahead and order the one you recommended on line.
I did buy the letraset pro markers. At what point in your repair do you use those?
I m so looking forward to my repairs. I did play a little with the ones I bought, but I can tell the quality is not great.

Oooooh DrFluffy, can't wait to see the results of your lessons in enamel repair! :)

This is such beautiful work, kyratango. DrFluffy did offer to fly over and take our pins to you, so if the lessons don't work out, expect a visit! ;)

Letraset promarkers are used to adjust color to match existant enamel when repair is dry.
Can't wait to see your repairs!

Just one more question: Once you are done with the repair and used the marker, do you then put any finishing coat? or do you stop after the marker?
  25. kyratango kyratango, 3 years ago
I stop after the marker, I don't like to over charge the layers. Thanks for your question!

Thank you Kyra... I am super duper excited to have some fun.
