    Hello CW,

I’d like to share this beautiful completed (still finishing the handles) Martin Maier! This trunk is my dream trunk! Jim Cardoza from HMS Trunks restored one almost identical to this one a number of years back, and I used to stare at the photos of his trunk and think — that’s my dream trunk embodied! I never imagined I would actually have the chance to own and restore its twin. Brian McWhirter initially located this trunk in Virginia, and he was kind enough to let me have it! Thanks 1000 times Brian!!

Anyway I hope you enjoy it as much as I do, I think the restoration does it justice.

Incidentally — I have started a new trunk group on Facebook, titled “Antique Trunks — Steamer, Flattop, Dometop & Waterfall”.

FB allows for a more interactive experience, and allows mentoring of newly interested people in a much more active way. I will most likely be focusing my posts there going forward. Please consider joining me if you have an interest, I think you will find some familiar faces.

Anyway I hope you enjoy this beautiful trunk —

    Thank you!!

yeah this is a nice one Damon, I know it was in rough shape when you got it, a lot rougher than we thought from the pictures and I know you put a ton of work into it and it shows, we talked about the trunk that Jim did a lot and whether or not another one existed, It's a pretty rare trunk and I about fell over when I saw it, sorry for calling you on a Sunday at 6:00 in the morning your time but I knew you would want it, if I had to nitpick at one thing I would make a nice leather lid lift and take off the metal one, leather was original, other than that it looks great! A job well done my friend.

I agree it needs a nice costume leather lid lifter
What are you using to tape off nail heads?
      Do you cut them yourself?
      Excellent job!!!!

Thanks Ben & Brian. I used painters tape and taped over about 20 nail heads at a time, then I burnished the tape tight around the nail head using a blunt but small piece of metal I had laying around. After that I took a fine sharp exacto knife and cut out the nail heads one by one. I know it sounds horrible, but it went more easily and quickly than I thought it would. And they came out looking amazing. Thanks for the comments!
