I've been kinda waiting for this piece for over 20yrs...finally got it today!! :-) :-) :-) It is roughly six feet long with cabinets on each end behind leaded glass doors with two half and two full width drawers in the center section. The bottom center panel looks like a third wide drawer but is actually just a panel over empty space, it does not appear there was ever a drawer behind it. (and it is probably supposed to be fixed in place according to the joinery at its ends) It is made of solid wood (heavy!) with a back made of narrow slats in frames, I'm not certain what variety of wood it all is. Its handles and hardware appear to be original with an 'antique brass' finish that doesn't look like it was ever polished bright. Drawer boxes are also made of solid wood pieces without dovetailing, using a neat kinda 'box' joint instead. The glass in each door is mostly clear rectangular panes, but with two small square stained glass accents of several little pieces each near the top corners.

That's the good news. The not-so-good news is that this piece has also been treated *very badly* by several cats that once co-habitated with it. The evidence now left behind (besides general staining and whatnot) is very rusty bottom hinges and drawer handles, and corroded (sugared?) leading on the outside lower portions of each glass panel. That's probably why that lower faux-drawer face is loose, too. (it is pictured here laying on top instead of in place) This damage happened long ago, it has been like that since I've ever known it. Beside that, there are only a couple very small trim pieces now detached, I think those pieces are still with it.

Its story (as I kinda sorta got it, a long time ago) is that it was originally a 'built-in' in a circa 1910's-20's Chicago apartment building that got drastically remodeled in the 1970's or so. I don't think I have much of any reason to doubt that. (and thank heavens that it didn't end up being smashed to pieces by demolition crew sledgehammers?!!)

My plans for it are to clean it up thoroughly and refinish (gently!) if needed, keeping it as original as I can. Those hinges and drawer pulls might be difficult to source if I need to, though there *is* a cloth bag still in a drawer that might actually have a spare handle or two in it at least -- there are a couple such bags in there and I wasn't able to look closely when moving it. The corrosion on the glass leading might be iffy to, I'd imagine the sugaring itself will scrub away rather easily but don't know what it might end up looking like afterward.

WISH ME LUCK -- if/when I do manage to get it redone, it will look awesome along a wall in my dining room even if 40-50yrs ahead of the house in its style?! (and BTW, would I be safe calling it "craftsman style", or is there a better description??)
