In 1969 Hasbro switched from the military based GI Joes to the adventure based Joes. In 1969 it was the Adventures of GI Joe with painted hair Joes and in 1970 it switched the GI Joe Adventurer Team with fuzz head Joes with Life-like hair and beard. Their enemy switched from WWII Germans and Japanese to small animals. The military era Joes would have kept them as pets/mascots. The GI Joe in the first photo is holding the ship's squid. The squid was actually released in 1975 with the Sea Wolf one man submarine set. It is the largest of Joe's animal foes.
The Octopus id from the Ropes of Danger set. That was reissue of the Deep Sea diver set with an octopus and treasure chest included.
A part 2 will be coming up featuring the shark and crocodile.

These are great!! The octopus is awesome!!
Pretty sure I had that same octopus but it didn't come with a GI Joe. Mind you octopuses do kinda all look the same.
