After last week’s windy, rainy weather, there were some fallen limbs from high in some of our oak trees. This nice big wasp’s nest must have been attached to one of those limbs.

The pictures were made with it lying on an 11” dinner plate. It hangs over the edge in a couple of places. It measure about 5+ inches thick.

I don’t know if this nest was built in more than 1 nesting season but it has a kind of “second story” to it.

The last picture is the side opposite all the cells.
I’m assuming the cells would have been facing the ground and protected from rain.

As far as being a “collectible”, it now joins a nice hornets’ nest, a 50” shedded snake skin, some kind of animal skull and a animal jaw bone with razor sharp teeth….all found around my property and saved for the enjoyment of looking at them.

Wonderful and nice to see open. We had a very large one (or wasps) on the farm and bigger than my sisters head. She wore it to her school Halloween and won first prize as a tribal princess. Very nice to see yours.

Wow!! That's huge! I once tried to save a hornets nest from one of my trees, but it started to fall apart once I removed it. It was a beauty too.

PhilDMorris, Your sister must have been a sight to see as the tribal princess. :^)

jscotto363, too bad about your deteriorating.
I collected one several years ago which hornets had built against my privacy fence. After I was sure there were no hornets inside it, I used a flat shovel to carefully scrape it off the fence. It’s essential “half a hornets’ nest”…..a perfect specimen to show the outside and interior of a nest.
My grandson took it to school to show his science class. It’s still perfectly preserved in it’s plastic box. I’m looking for a plastic box that will accommodate this nest now.

Thank you to everyone for the 11 loves!

This is a cool find. We salvaged a hornet's nest from our Bradford pear tree, still attached to the branch. It hangs in our garage to protect it from the elements. We have it near our garage window facing east, so when the sun rises in the morning and lights up the 'fabric' of the nest, it emits a beautiful red glowing reflection. If anyone cares to see the image, let me know, I'll post photos.
Our property allows us some interesting nature 'artifacts' which makes living in the country a real treat. Thanks for sharing your find and your story.

Blueyecon, thanks for the love and the comment.
Please DO post yours! I’d love to see it. I haven’t tried looking at mine with the sun shining thru it…that must be fascinating to see.
I’ll be watching for your post. :^)
