Here's a super piece of Czech glass that I got at a flea market recently!
It is just so interesting & unusual, & thus irresistible to me.
The vase is made from an impressive four layers of cased glass - light amber over red & green spatter with brown loops, over white, with another layer of pale spreading amber inside. It measures 16.5 cm tall, 9.5 cm across the top rim, & 8 cm across the base.
What makes this even more interesting is the marking on the base. Marked examples of Czech glass are rarely seen in Australia, out of all the 1920s/30s Czech glass I've handled, this is only the third one in my collection.
The decor is one I've never encountered before, with large brown loops, & what looks like a Bambus style flame over a fine spatter & a subtle vertical stripe. In person, there appears to be a touch of glitter in the brown loops, so there's possibly some aventurine is in the mix, too.
The shape is also new to me.
Excellent condition for its age.
Czech origin circa 1920s/30s.

Nice piece! The marking looks like paint maybe they get polished off over the years?
I wonder what Aleš will make of it ? It’s fabulous. Congratulations.
Many thanks, Bernard!
It does appear to be some kind of paint, & I think I've read these marks called "ink stamps". They are kind of silvery, like a metallic paint. I have one other found in Australia with this type of mark. The other marks are moulded (very hard to see & photograph, especially if they're on a spatter background) & etched. I have one vase with an etched mark, it was purchased from the USA.
Thanks also, Kevin!
Yes, I'm also keen to hear Ales' opinion on this one. It's definitely something special!
An unusual one, for sure.
Much appreciated, Wow22!
Beautiful piece. This is the first time I've seen this decor. It could be a product of the Franz Tomschick glassworks. The shape of the vase corresponds to the drawing of shape no. 0815 in Tomschick's drawing book from 1929. Since this is the only example of this decor that I know of, the designation is with a question mark.
Many thanks, Ales, this is so interesting to know. I felt that it was something very different from when I first saw it. If you like I could send you some photos of it for your reference.
It's really interesting. There seem to be some elements in the decor that could point to Steinwald, some to Welz, but I still think it's Tomschick. Maybe another shape with this decor will appear someday. I'd be happy if you could send me some photos that I could use for the new website I'm working on. Thanks.
Ales, I am more than happy to assist. I'll take some new photos with a plain white background & will be in touch soon
This decor is really not like any known Welz production... Neither is the shape. Additionally, the provenance mark on the underside would likely exclude it from any connection to Welz, as there is no known Welz production showing that type of mark.
Thanks for that, Craig!
For me, it’s just a crazy cool piece of glass & I feel lucky to have found it…
