George Woodall Team Queen's Burmese Cameo, Jules Barbe Gilded Vase

Wonderful, Thomas Webb & Sons George Woodall Team vase featuring a beautiful Asian inspired scene with highly detailed hand carved ocean waves that start at the base, extending up the sides and around the parameter of the vase.

Above the waves are pad cameo applied fish, and white great egrets. The top of the vase starts a beautiful cameo carved green and ruby glass fruit tree overlooking the water, wrapping around the vase, extending towards the center of the vessel. One side features a birdhouse hanging from the tree. The birdhouse is hand carved and has an interior layer of brown flint glass. The opposite side of the vase features a floating vessel with an eternal flame. Like the birdhouse, the eternal flame vessel is hand carved ruby glass with an interior layer of brown flint glass used for shading the eternal flame vessel. They highly detailed the fruit hanging from the fruit tree playing on the ruby, green and brown cameo colors to create dimensional, detailed fruit. All of the gold decor was hand applied by Jules Barbe.

What I love about this vase is that it's colorful! It's far from traditional white English cameo glass. This is a one and done vase, it is the only example in the world. It's a George Woodall team vase, designed by George Woodall, gold decorated by none other than Jules Barbe himself, and finished by Charles Nash (undoubtedly related to Arthur J. Nash of Tiffany fame who also worked at Thomas Webb just before going to America to start the Favrile blown glass department at Tiffany Furnaces in New York). It's a work of art by some of the most prolific glass legends in history!

This vase is numbered in the Thomas Webb & Sons factory price book as W.2413 (W denotes Woodall Team). A sketch for the design of this vase appears in R. and L. Grover, English Cameo Glass, New York, 1980, p. 325.

The Thomas Webb & Sons factory price book lists W.2413 as:
6" Green on Queen's Burmese ground, ruby brown on top, with birdhouse.
Woodall 40/-; Barbe 2/-;Nash 6d SP £6.6s (this is worker time, and SP=Selling Price in British pounds and shillings).

Interesting that the line drawing notes that W.2413 "Colour as 2415". W.2415 is a vase of similar size, with a similar Asian motif water design, with the vase done in identical colors, including the Queen's Burmese ground. Woodall vase W.2415 has a side note that it was included with W.2413, so apparently these may have been sold as a set. The vase does fluoresce under a UV light as Queen's Burmese does (see photos).
