TE Lawrence owned eight different Broughs. He wrote of racing across the rough roads in England on one of these machines. They were the fastest thing on two wheels. It would take another 30 years before good brakes would be installed on a motorcycle. I took this picture in Oley Pa

Thanks for posting Ron...TE Lawrence was killed in a M/c crash in my home county of Dorset..just down the road from my home (whilst riding his SS100).

Lovely. I'll see if i can get my Father to scan the photo of Grandad on his Brough Superior ( when I was little i always thought it was called a gruff superior, lol).
From what i remember it didn't look quite the same as this one but more 'old fashioned'.
Didn't Lawence of Arabia die in a motorbike accident?

Oops i should have read all the posts, I've just seen Hems, about Lawrence crashing in Dorset. Was it on a Brough you know?

Hi Ron. Hope you and yours are well!
As I mentioned in my comment months ago in (4.) above: Dorset is my home county and I still ride the self same roads Thomas Shaw aka T.E. Lawrence rode back then, they've changed but little! I own several vintage British bikes and I also have a silver pen and pencil set that Lawrence owned when young (his nickname then was "Ned"), I believe the treasured set accompanied him to Oxford. He much later presented the set to a friend and fellow motorcyclist who had twice ridden his Coventry Eagle Flying-8 (similar to an SS100) long distances fetching and carrying for T.E.
It was this man's grandson (a fellow member of the Norton Owners Club) who reluctantly sold the set to me following years of my begging him! I'll have to do a post on it sometime. I did fleetingly show it in my last post... it's the red boxed set with the ribbed pen and pencil in the last photo in my post (link below)

Sorry, after all that; I didn't answer Vintagefran's question! YES, T.E. Shaw (Lawrence) did die on his last Brough SS100 (Registration Number "GW 2275") . It was little damaged and it was retrieved by George Brough himself, taken back to the factory and was repaired and returned to it's pre-crash state. I believe it is currently on public display in the Imperial War Museum in London.

    Hi RonM
Thanks for dropping in and commenting on my "Lawrence of Arabia" post which I promised so many months ago! For anyone interested; A picture of Lawrence sitting on one of his eight Brough Superior SS-100's (No. RK 4907) is shown on the last photograph. Here is the link:
